Don't Look, Don't See

I woke this morning with the intention of doing regular weekly maintenance cleaning. I looked around my tidy house and patted myself on the back as I determined that it merely needed minor things like sweeping, vacuuming, a basket of toys put away, etc.

And then I pulled the couch front...and was horrified to discover a shocking amount of hideous mess that I can't even find the words to describe, so I posted pics here for you to truly appreciate the utter pigsty that was hiding beneath my couch.

*WARNING*
It is not for the faint of heart, or the obsessively anal neat freaks.

Of course, I now have called into question what lies beneath every single piece of furniture in my house and have been overwhelmed by the urge to pull them all forward and clean like a mad woman...

But I don't have time this morning, so I will implement a new policy: Don't Look, Don't See. If I don't see it, it isn't there and I don't need to clean it.

This policy will go nicely with my existing policy of: Don't Listen, Don't Hear (the policy I use to avoid registering the whining and fighting in the car). As well as my policy of: Don't Touch, Don't Feel (where I don't walk around my kitchen barefoot so I won't feel how badly it needs to be mopped).

And even as I type, I am beginning to realize the broader implications of my new policy... Not only will I be able to avoid pulling every piece of furniture front to clean beneath it - I can avoid weeding in the flowerbeds by focusing on blooming petals instead of the ground, as well as vacuuming the car by keeping my eyes on the road (where they rightfully should be anyway).

The apples never do fall far from the tree...

I am thrilled that all three of the big kids seem to have inherited my love of horses. Grace in particular is obsessed with all things horses these days - and horses seem to have brought out the daring side in her... She is already "chomping at the bit" (pun intended!) to canter and gallop. This little girl who won't put her whole head under water will climb on the back of a 16-hand horse and think she's ready to race down the field by herself!

What is it with the school thing?

My last post sparked a round of conversations with a few readers (all near and dear friends, so I know they won't take this new post the wrong way) who happen to send their kids to school that got me to thinking...

What is it with the school debate? Why can't it just be a matter of personal opinion?

If someone says they hate Fords, and you (the collective "you" here - not you in particular) drive a Ford - you chalk it up to their personal opinion and you don't really care why they hate Fords or what they think of you for driving a Ford. Your vehicle preferences are obviously different from theirs.

Same thing with broccoli. If you love broccoli, and someone else says they can't stand the taste of broccoli - it doesn't really matter, your and their tastes in food are obviously different.

If you believe in a god, while someone else believes instead in many - it doesn't really matter, you and they obviously have different beliefs that led you to each join different faiths.

Why not with education? Why do we take it so much more personally with education?

One educational option is not the one right or perfect educational option for everybody - just as there is no one spiritual path that is the right one for everybody... And if you suggest so, I am bound to think of you the same I happen to think of those that do insist there is one spiritual path for everybody! ;)-

Now how's that for an inflammatory post, lol?
